Guggisberg Cheese There are several attractions in Amish Country that you simply cannot miss. Guggisberg Cheese is one of those attractions.

If the name “Guggisberg” sounds familiar, it should! Renowned cheesemaker Alfred Guggisberg invented “Baby Swiss” cheese and helped make this entire area famous for its cheese.

Alfred, a Swiss immigrant, founded Guggisberg Cheese along with his wife, Margaret, after emigrating to the United States from Switzerland. Alfred felt limited in his native Switzerland, and came to the United States to try and make the most of the profession he was trained for — cheesemaking. Upon arriving in Holmes County Alfred soon discovered that the lush farmlands of the Doughty Valley allowed him to make wonderful cheeses. At a certain point he began experimenting, looking for a “new” cheese he could make that would take full advantage of the flavorful milk produced by the area’s Amish farmers.

Eventually, Alfred produced what became known as “Baby Swiss” cheese. The rest, as they say, is history. Once introduced in the marketplace, it didn’t take long for Guggisberg Swiss Cheese to become very popular locally and now, Guggisberg Baby Swiss Cheese — the ORIGINAL baby Swiss cheese — is famous the world over.

Experience a working cheese house and sample the wonderful cheese! You can visit Guggisberg Cheese six days a week. Click here to visit the Guggisberg Cheese website.

Oh, by the way — Guggisberg Cheese is just across the street from the Guggisberg Swiss Inn! After visiting the cheese house you can pop right across the street and enjoy authentic Swiss/Austrian/Amish cooking at Chalet in the Valley Restaurant. (330-893-2550)
